95% favour allowing bikes in bus lanes nationwide

An online poll conducted by Peugeot Scooters reveals that public opinion is firmly behind allowing motorcycles and scooters to use bus lanes in towns and cities across the UK, enabling riders to enjoy the safety and convenience benefits already open to cyclists. Prompted by the announcement from London Mayor Boris Johnson that motorcyclists will be able to share red route bus lanes with buses, cyclists and black taxis on an 18-month trial basis, Peugeot asked the question;

"Should bus lanes be opened up to scooters and motorcycles country wide?" Out of 1000 respondents, 95% said “yes” – an overwhelming majority.
First introduced in Bristol in 1996, the addition of London means that there are now at least fourteen towns and cities throughout the UK providing bus lane access, while in Northern Ireland all of the bus lanes are open to motorcyclists. However there are still some significant exceptions, such as Cambridge, Cardiff, Leeds, Manchester and Oxford.

Many local authorities have opened up bus lanes to all two-wheelers (motorcycles, bicycles and scooters) to relieve congestion by encouraging people to switch from four wheels to two. Scooters offer environmental benefits compared to cars, because journey times are faster, so their emissions are lower, they use less fuel and they cause a fraction of wear and tear to roads compared to other motorized transport modes. With prices starting at under £1000 for a brand new 50cc Peugeot V-Clic, which delivers 70-100 mpg and is covered by a 24-month warranty, no wonder that more people took their motorcycle test in 2007/8 than at any time since 2000/01.
