Four percent more exhibitors and five percent more bikers in Cologne for INtermot 2010
INTERMOT Cologne grew again in 2010, in spite of a European motorcycle market that is struggling in the current economic climate. During the five days of the trade fair, the organizers registered more than 210,000 motorcycle and scooter fans in the city of Cologne.
INTERMOT proved irresistable to trade and public alike with its unique combination of manufacturer presentations, spectacular shows and motor sports events, and an attractive programme of hands-on activities. The manufacturers were also happy, thanks to the high visitor turnout of more than 195,000 specialist buyers and motorcycle enthusiasts who came to the trade fair halls of INTERMOT Cologne from 108 countries. Trade visitors accounted for around 30 per cent of the attendees. Significantly more trade visitors came particularly from Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Italy, and more buyers were also registered from Sweden, Austria and the UK. The motorcycle service in Cologne Cathedral and the Suzuki NIGHT of the JUMPs freestyle MX world championships in Lanxess Arena both attracted big crowds.
The number of exhibitors at INTERMOT Cologne also rose compared to the previous event, increasing by four per cent. The event featured a total of 1,107 manufacturers from 40 countries (2008: 1,068 from 38 countries), who presented 1,596 brands. A total of 405 suppliers came from Germany and 702 from abroad. The foreign exhibitors therefore accounted for 63 per cent of all suppliers. After Germany, the countries with the largest number of exhibitors were China, Taiwan and Italy, followed by the UK, Pakistan, the USA and the Netherlands. At INTERMOT Cologne all the major manufacturers were once again together at one event for the first time since the previous trade fair. From Aprilia, BMW, Derbi, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Kymco, Peugeot, Piaggio, Suzuki, Triumph and Vespa to Yamaha - the entire international motorcycle scene was represented in Cologne.
With its new INTERMOT e-motion segment, INTERMOT underlines the sector's expertise in the area of future-orientated mobility. The focus was on electrically powered two-wheelers, which form an appropriate intersection between motorised and non-motorised two-wheelers. More than 120 suppliers in Hall 5.2 and almost 350 brands throughout INTERMOT presented new products and innovations for light electric vehicles (LEVs) - pedelecs and e-bikes - but also for e-scooters and e-motorcycles. The manufacturers of electric vehicles registered a very encouraging visitor turnout from the very first day of the fair and also in particular enjoyed extensive press coverage in the daily media, which put the spotlight on electric mobility as a vital issue for the future. The visitor turnout was therefore also correspondingly great at the test track, with its diverse range of attractions. INTERMOT even featured the first LEV and electric scooter world championships, which took place at a specially constructed racetrack. Electric mobility was also the topic of various symposiums and conferences, including the LEV Conference in cooperation with ExtraEnergy.org and the e-congress addressing the topic of electric power for short-range mobility, organized in collaboration with the Bicycle-Friendly Towns and Municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia Working Group. In addition, INTERMOT hosted the general meeting of the international LEV Association (LEVA).
As an event-focused trade fair there were additional treats in store for motorcycle and scooter enthusiasts. The event action area, for example, featured spectacular stunt shows by Chris Pfeiffer, Kevin Carmichael, Oliver Ronzheimer and Horst Hoffmann. What's more, professional bikers demonstrated their skills in daring freestyle MX jumps and dragster racing presentations. Visitors had the opportunity to experience motor sports live in the hotly contested Yamaha Cup races, the KTM and Triumph brand series, the demonstration races of the world champion long-distance bikers and the top IDM motorcyclists.
INTERMOT featured a programme of hands-on activities so that visitors could actively take part in the event as well. Participants tried out the various test tracks with more than 20,000 test rides during the trade fair. Besides experienced bikers and people who are new to motorcycling or returning to it after a prolonged absence, youngsters were also able to get their first experience in riding motorised two-wheelers in Cologne. "INTERMOT Young Action" in Hall 5.1 was a veritable paradise for children and teenagers, offering play areas and test tracks for scooters, bicycles, mini-quads, minibikes and motorcycles suitable for teens. Besides having the opportunity to earn their "gaming driving licence", kids were able to try out the PlayStation truck, play racing games in the Wii Gaming Area and enjoy other new video games at the "gamesparcours", which the Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU) organized with the support of Sony, Nintendo and Koelnmesse. Additional entertainment for children was provided at the "Kids Hard Rock Café.
Featuring the second Cologne Custom Championships, where the best bikes in the categories Chopper/Cruiser, Fighter, Sports Bike, Café Racer and Scooter were presented, Intermot had some extreme machines on show too. The "Bike Farm" motorcycle firm won in all categories, thus winning not only the prize money of ¤5,000, but also directly qualifying for the Customizing World Championship competition in Sturgis, South Dakota, USA.
This year, the Saturday during INTERMOT once again served as the day for big motorcycle events in the city. In cooperation with the Mogo team from Hamburg led by Pastor Erich Faehling, Cologne Cathedral hosted the third ecumenical church service for bikers. This year, it attracted more participants than ever before, with around 5,000 motorcyclists and passengers taking part in the church service and the subsequent convoy through the city to INTERMOT Cologne 2010. In the evening, the freestyle motocross bikers presented their fascinating flying jumps to a crowd of more than 10,000 spectators at the Suzuki NIGHT of the JUMPS freestyle motocross world championships in the LANXESS Arena.
