The ultimate touring kit
Now that summer is here many bikers thoughts turn to touring. Whether it's a day in the country, a weekend break or a grand tour, some basic preparations will make the adventure safer, more comfortable and memorable for all the right reasons.
Remember to check your bike before setting out using the POWER technique. P is for petrol. O is for oil. W is for water. E is for electrics. R is for rubber (tyres).
It's not only the bike that needs to be prepared, so does the rider and Knox produces a range of accessories that are the Ultimate Touring Kit and are perfectly in-tune with the touring biker's needs.
Gloves need to be comfortable to wear throughout the long summer days but without sacrificing the necessary protection. As part of the Hand Armour range, the Recon is made from high quality supple hide, with a gel-lined knuckles protector. Patented SPS sliders on the palm protect the vulnerable scaphoid bone that links the thumb with the wrist and is easily fractured in even the slowest of falls. The innovative BOA closure system can be dialled in quickly and easily for a perfect fit around the cuff, keeping the glove securely in place and the rider perfectly comfortable.
Back protection is crucial and at just 500g the Kompakt is comfortable and unobtrusive. Thanks to the unique roll-up and store design it’s easy to carry at the journey's end. Ultra light honeycomb exceeds the standard required for EN1621-2 (Level 1) and has been re-shaped for 2011 with a slimmer profile. Like all Knox back protectors, additional coccyx (tail bone) protection is standard. Comfort is assured, with breathable ‘spacer’ fabric helping to increase airflow between the protector and the body. For total reassurance, an optional CE approved Chest Protector can be fitted to the Kompakt for extra torso protection.
Of course keeping cool and comfortable is also essential and Dry Inside base layers take this in their stride. Made from cool comfortable cotton that wicks away moisture pushing it to the outside where it can evaporate Dry Inside also has a unique one way water path the stops water coming in from the outside.
Knox backpacks have always had a reputation for providing comfortable and aerodynamic carrying capacity, but the new K-Pack takes this to a new level. Offering up to 25-litre capacity, the clam-opening main compartment is easy to pack and there's and additional helmet carry bag that can be secured to the outside once you reach your destination. An integral hi-viz waterproof cover is essential for any unseasonal downpours and other practical features include removable hip pack and bottle carry pouch. Velcro-fastening zip tags and flap-free strap system ensure that everything stays in place while on the move.
All Knox products are tested to their own in house standard KNX-SD-3 so you can be assured of the quality. Choosing the best kit on the market needn't cost a fortune and will make a huge difference to long summer days in the saddle.
