Scooters are streets ahead on fuel savings

Modern motor cars may be getting more economical, but they still trail behind scooters in the race to travel the most miles per gallon.

Figures released by the Department for Transport show that the average fuel consumption for a new car was 43.6 miles per gallon in 2009. Ten years earlier the figure was barely 35 mpg and while cars are becoming less 'thirsty' they still have a long way to go to match the frugal 100 mpg delivered by Peugeot's Kisbee scooter.
