Motorcycle beats the Oxford Blues for Commuters

Witney motorcyclist Dan Sager celebrated Ride to Work Day by delivering a gift of breakfast croissants from the staff at Witney Business & Innovation Centre to their colleagues in Oxford, during the morning rush hour.

Dan, who is the director of a public relations company, left his office in the Witney Innovation Centre at 8.30 am on Monday 16th June and arrived in Oxford on the dot of nine o’clock, completing the 16 mile trip in 30 minutes.

Congestion on the busy A40 between Witney and Oxford has worsened over recent years - the bus journey from the market town to the city takes more than an hour at peak times and car drivers experience similar travel times.

"Not only is commuting by motorcycle or scooter significantly quicker than by car or bus, you can also park for free in all council car parks" explains Dan. "Better still, a report from the Office for National Statistics shows that commuting by motorcycle is less stressful than using cars or public transport".

On Ride to Work Day, motorbike and scooter riders around the world show just how enjoyable their daily commute is, by demonstrating time savings and reduced travel costs.

Notes
  1. The S1 bus service from Witney - Oxford is timetabled to take 66 minutes (07:45-08:51).
  2. Government approved mileage rates are £0.45 for cars and £0.24 for motorcycles, so motorcycles are 47% less expensive to run than cars. For an average weekly commute of 160 miles a motorcycle would cost £33.60 less to run than a car.  http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/travel.htm
