Maintain your Battery through the OBDII Port

Modern car batteries can go flat due to a combination of factors, including parasitic drain from electronic components, infrequent or short trips that don't allow the battery to fully recharge, and the natural aging and degradation of the battery itself. Stop-start technology adds an additional strain, so it makes sense to maintain the battery with a smart charger if the car is parked for more than a few days.

This can be a particular problem for owners of performance cars that are only driven occasionally, vehicles stored at holiday homes and those left in long-stay parking at airports, camper vans and motorhomes, etc.

Until now, that would involve lifting the bonnet on most cars and connecting the charger to the battery with crocodile clips. OptiMate have simplified this operation with the new O37 SAE to OBD II Cable, a groundbreaking accessory which transforms a vehicle’s internal OBDII diagnostic port into a convenient connection point for OptiMate battery chargers.

OBDII ports (also known as EOBD in Europe) have been mandatory on new petrol cars since 2001 and on diesels since 2004, so most drivers will own a compatible vehicle. They are commonly located directly under the steering column, although some manufacturers position them near the centre console or even in the glove compartment!

Simply plug the O37 Cable into the OBDII port while the vehicle is parked, then connect it to a suitable smart charger, like the OptiMate 2 Duo. This will charge and maintain the battery at a rate of 2 Amps, well within the safety margins on the port.

The 100 cm cable has a 7.5A fuse, to protect itself and the charger from any power surge from the battery or car’s electrical system. It comes with an in-line rubber seal for the SAE connection and is tested to perform in extreme temperatures (down to -40°C/-40°F), making it suitable for outdoor use.

The OptiMate O37 SAE to OBD II Cable sells for £18.90 (Inc. VAT) and comes with a 3-year warranty. The OptiMate 2 Duo costs £68.90 (Inc. VAT).
