Smart Solar Charger for Starter Batteries

The new OptiMate Solar Duo 20W Car Kit keeps 12V starter batteries charged and healthy in cars, camper vans and motorhomes stored where there’s no access to mains power – particularly useful during winter lay-up.

The Solar Duo uses OptiMate’s advanced solar pulse charging technology, which converts the low-level power produced by the 20W polycrystalline solar panel into the high-current pulses required for effective charging and long-term battery maintenance. 

Unlike traditional solar trickle chargers, which can struggle to deliver consistent power and may even discharge the battery on cloudy days, the OptiMate system maintains full efficiency in variable conditions and can even recover ‘dead’ batteries from as low as 4 volts.

The kit includes the OptiMate Solar TM522-D2 smart charger-controller, a fully automatic 2 amp unit with a five-LED display that provides detailed feedback on charging progress and battery condition. 

During daylight, the controller delivers the optimum charge and maintenance programme; at night, or whenever no solar power is available, it switches to monitoring mode, updating battery status every three seconds. This dual-function design ensures complete 24/7 care without risk of overcharging or damage to sensitive vehicle electronics.

Suction mounts are included; these can be attached either to the front of the solar panel for installation inside a windscreen, or to the back for placement on a roof or exterior surface. The kit also features an OptiMate OBD lead for direct plug-in charging through the vehicle’s diagnostic port, an OptiMate O4 battery clamp lead, and a premium travel bag for storage and transport. The charger-controller is IP54 weatherproof, making the entire system suitable for outdoor use in all seasons.
